Subject: IH 5288 - Oil leak

Fontanelle, IA

I am very close to pulling the trigger on a 1984 5288. In looking at the tractor and the current owner, it definitely looks to be well cared for. However, when I drove it around the barnyard for about 15 minutes and put it back in the shed, i noticed a slight motor oil leak on the rear part of the oil pan.

I can't tell if it is a oil pan gasket leak or a gasket leaking where the filter assembly bolts to the side of the block? In talking with my local Case IH mechanic, he mentioned that there is a dry check plug to remove that I can remove to ensure that the oil I see is not coming from a leaking rear main engine seal or the front seal of the hydraulic pump? Does anyone have any pictures of this plug? Apparently, it is on the right side of the tractor about where the tractor would "split"?

Many thanks for all your help!
Bart

The plug he's talking about is undrenieth the tractor a 1 and 1/16 wrench to remove it, its the very 1st plug from the engine the one 5" away is hyd oil, that hole should be dry but you may get some hyd/ engine oil out I doubt any engine oil. The leak that I see could be the pan gasket or in some cases if its coming from higher could be the gasket at rear of engine and packing at camshaft, has to be split to repair. The oil filter housing is known to leak. To be fair wash off thourghly and inspect closely it will show up. eral

From what I can see in the photo it looks like the leak may be coming from up above, it may be something over the transmition running down. How much is the owner asking for the tractor? bigmoe

As black as the oil is, I would guess engine oil. I would clean it of and watch it again. My guess is the rear engine plate gasket or oil filter base. Baby Robin

Kevin, Brandon, and Andy,

Thanks again for all of the advice with this tractor. it is a 1984 MFWD with ~7500 hours. It's too expensive... The hard part is that Machinery Pete is kind of right: you just don't find a lot of decent, used tractors out there that aren't at a premium. I'll do the checks and let you know what I find out.
